 japan Sendai was originally constructed as a castle town under the Date feudal domain.  Today it is the largest city in the Tohoku region, with a population of over one million.  It is affectionately known as the City of Trees (Mori no Miyako) on account of its tree-lined roads and lush green parks, and hosts several major festivals each year.

  • Aoba Castle was built in 1610 by lord Date Masamune, a military commander renowned throughout Japan.  All that remains of the castle today are the moss-covered walls and a reconstructed turret.  Inside the castle grounds are various statues, a museum, temple, restaurants and numerous souvenir shops.
    • Rinnoji Temple was used as a place of worship by the Date clan.  It provides visitors with a vast garden, magnificent pond and a three story Pagoda.
    • Sendai Science Museum provides visitors with the opportunity to experience some of the latest technological advances, including a flight simulator, a machine that measures physical fitness and numerous other exhibitions.

    • Sendai Yagiyama Bennyland is Tohoku’s largest amusement park.
    • Sendai Yagiyama Zoo is home to approximately 800 different species.  It contains the popular “Monkey Mountain” and “Africa Park”.
    • Matsushima is thought to be one of the three most beautiful sights of Japan.  Visitors can view over 200 islands across the bay.  There are various temples, gardens, parks and boat cruises.
    • Zao is a mountainous range bordering Yamagata and Miyagi prefectures.  At the top of Zao lies Okama Crater Lake, a breathtaking view that draws visitors from around the world.  Next to the crater is a restaurant, rest area and souvenir shop.  Fantastic area for hiking in the warmer months and viewing the Snow Monsters in winter.
