Kyoto is Japan’s former capital and was the Emperor’s residence from 794 to 1868 (when it was moved to Tokyo). Kyoto is Japan’s seventh largest city and has a population of 1.5 million. Kyoto is the only large city in Japan that still has numerous pre-war buildings however recent architectural changes have seen the addition of several modern buildings such as Kyoto Station. Kyoto is surrounded on three sides by Higashiyama, Kitayama and Nishiyama mountains. Today, Kyoto has over 1,600 Buddhist temples, 400 Shinto shrines and numerous palaces, gardens and historical architecture.

Kyoto is renowned for its delicious Japanese food and cuisine. Because the city of Kyoto is some distance from the ocean and home to many Buddhist temples, the local cuisine differs significantly from other regions of Japan.
Many major festivals are held in Kyoto.
