  • Imperial Palace (Kokyo) is the residence of the Emperor of Japan.  Originally located in Kyoto, the palace was moved to Tokyo in 1868.  The original building was destroyed during World War II and the current building was rebuilt in the same style as its predecessor in 1968.  Most of the building is closed to the public but the East Gardens are usually accessible for tourists.  The inner palace is open to the public bi-annually, on the Emperor’s birthday and on January 2nd to celebrate the New Year.
